I have often wondered this myself. I work in a library, and I AM a librarian.

I am making generalities here, but I think they are true:
1) Most people do not know that here are "other" library jobs (like cataloger, library technician, systems manager, etc.
2) Most people do not that librarians have Master's Degrees.
3) Most people think librarians sit around and read all day
4) Most people don't know what's involved in library work.

I worked as a library assistant in a law library. The librarians there took their professions seriously. One librarian said (in regard to your comment, "Just because I work in a hospital doesn't make me a doctor."
