We lived in Mexico as kids and we would dig a huge hole in my Grandmother's yard and pretend it was a house... dirt, leaves, flowers, and grass were the groceries; and we were rumored to have even eaten our gross concotions. We would also keep the boxes and plastic bottles of food my Dad brough us back from the U.S and we'd pretend that we were Americans and made up our own version of speaking "English". Another cool thing was to take the remains of a cob of corn and nail bottle caps to the sides to make cars; we'd race them them down very steep heels, but they'de just end up rolling on their side... Oh, yes... Mexico is fireworks king, we use them everyday and kids can get them at the local convenience store... We'd buy Roman Candles and pretend they were magic wands... this turned out to be a bad idea once because I aimed it at the road and out of nowhere a car drives by in the night and the ball of sparks flew right in through the driver's window... we heard a screech, some cussing and alot of honking... Ahhh, memories...

We made our own musical instruments out of shoeboxes, rubber bands, paper, balloons, etc. My mom and a few neighbors endured a "concert" we gave - about 5 "musicians" with drums, guitars, and various other instruments, mostly percussion, I think someone actually had a plastic recorder, and I think I was the only one who could read music (not that we could tune a guitar whose strings were rubber bands, but we handed out sheet music anyway). I think we even had the gall to charge them a nickel for the sonic assault.
Aside from the usual forts and matchbox car set-ups made from books, I was big on books with suggested projects, so from the book of science experiments for kids, we made a periscope, and some other stuff that didn't work out so well, some monster masks, and from another book, I learned book-binding and made a friend and me code books, so we could write each other secret notes like "meet me after dinner under the lamppost" (not that anyone cared, but 12-yr-old girls can never be too careful). Someone also had a boy scout handbook that claimed you could fry an egg on a coffee can over a fire. I got my last belting over that.
Looking back, my parents were incredibly indulgent of our various "learning experiences." I know parents are supposed to encourage creative and educational activities, but mine went above and beyond the call of duty. Great memories!!!

I made a stick doll with a clothespin (the non-clipping type)and used a kitchen match box for her bed. I used pine straw (pine needles) to make play houses and used a real can to play kick the can in the evening in summer.
