Mathematics is the universal language because it is represented by Latin/Greek symbols and numbers. All civilizations can understand the symbols, and all civilizations can relate to one another through mathematics. Math is the great equalizer!

Mathematics is probably universal, but it is not a language. With mathematics I could plot my pulse rate and temperature as a function of my proximity to a beautiful woman and I could write out in symbols the equations of her curves. But I could not tell her that her eyes were limpid pools in which a man might happily drown.

I don't believe so. Mathematics has to be represented by a somewhat arbitrary choice of symbols, notation and definitions, and this does not transcend language the way some "mathematicians" portray.

I remember at TA I had for college math. He barely spoke a word of English but he sure know his math. He would do problems on the board in 3 steps that would take us at least 10 steps. He did the rest in his head. It was amazing. He had a very difficult time explaining things to us using words but he could explain them using math and symbols.

thas what the movies tell us!!
On second thought, it could be since the numbers are supposed to be same in all the civilization...
Also, I heard that Sanskrit can be one universal language as most of the world languages are derived from it...
