People can say France would have won/lost if ZZ was still in play, however the fact will never be known as that is not how the game panned out. You can not say ZZ or someone else would not have scored as how many games were won and lost in the last minute or two of a game. Quite a few were decided in those crucial minutes including Italy and Germany. Anything is possible. As for penalty kicks, they are so hard to defend for a keeper and really are pot luck for the shooter. Terrible way to decide a Final. Does not reflect the game or the effort put in by BOTH sides competing. Though had he remained in the game perhaps Treze would not have even had an attempt, so really who knows. They were definitely subdued by his ejection as I am sure Italy would be had Cannavaro, their captain and hero been ejected. The players look to their leaders and that is a fact.
As for journalists and newspapers, they are hardly ever ethical or unbiased. They do not really care for the words they write as long as the sales go up. They will take a near dead issue and twist it, put a new slant on it until it can be milked no more. They are wrong, but it is still selling papers and that is their only concern.

Sick and tired of hearing sore losers whining that if Zidane hadn't been carded, France would have won at the penalty shots. Give it up! and stop blaming Materazzi for what Zidane did.....I didn't and I won't buy it. Zidane is the sole responsible for his unforgivable (except by the French) action.
France lost because they missed at penalty shots...Italy lost before in penalty shots...it can happen to any team.
if, if, if.....get over it. Eurocup in 2008 will give French fans hope again if they can accept their defeat and move on. Sheeeesh!!!

Although Zidane's expulsion brought the team down after the tie, they had played with Zidane for 90 minutes without being able to score a goal. They are just looking for a scape goat.

No, it's not solely his fault France lost, but had he not been red-carded, I think France would have won the penalty shootout. It was a very unfortuate incident and I think Materazzi knew Zidane would react and was trying to get on his nerves the entire game until Zidane snapped. I feel very sad for Zidane, his retirement was so unglorious, but it's not right for people to blame him like this.

no, its not right that they blame the loss on zidane. the headbutt was completely irrelevant to the game. france would have lost anyway, with or without zidane.

zedan was not the reason france lost
zizou got send of in the last 2 minutes of the extra time//no way he could have scored a goal in these minutes...
it is not zizou's fought
it is the whole team
first...henry...who i dont know why the coach substituted him althought he was doing just fine
second the whole team was disappointed and lost hope of winning the cup ..that's why they werent at their same ususal level of playing
then finally zizou who first got injured in his arm and was asking for substitution and the coach couldnt just substitute him
so i think it is 70% the coach's mistake
he should have encouraged his players more than that
