Uploading and downloading are related terms used to describe the transfer of electronic data between two computers or similar systems. Their primary usage is as a verb: to upload is to send data from a local system to some remote system, such as a website, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server, or other similar systems. To download is to receive data from a remote system.

In general use, the terms do not refer to the basic communication required for the operation of the software including connecting to an FTP server or requesting and receiving data displayed in a web browser. Instead, they are reserved for the specific and intentional act of transferring a file.

The term "downloading" is also used as a description to the process of massive retrieval of music, DVD movies, software etc., - users of such routine saves a lot of money in copyrighted content. There are two basic ways of getting access to the source of any data. The first one is represented by sharing networks, which is prosecuted very often - so it means that is dangerous. The second one is represented by express download zones (usenets) which is hassle free and save and very quick. There are few providers of really big usenets, one of them is maintained by [www.freedreamer.net]

By extension, the terms can be used as nouns. In this context, an upload is any file that has been uploaded, particularly if it is awaiting the recipient's attention. A download is any file that is offered for downloading or that has been downloaded.

Similar, but less commonly used, the transfer of data from one remote computer to another is called sideloading.

When you download something off the Internet, it means that you're retrieving a file from a web site and adding it to your harddrive or other storage device. When you upload something, you're adding a file to an Internet web site for others to download.

The internet is built with Servers and Clients.

The client (which is you) access an server(which is your Internet Service Provider like AOL) which then connects you to the internet.

When you are on the internet, you can surf, watch movies, email, etc... And you can also transfer files.

Downloading is a process where, you retrieve a file/document from the internet and save it on your computer.

Uploading is the opposite, a process where you take a file from your computer and send it to an internet location (server).

Download refers to transferring files or streaming content
to a client (Your computer) from a server. From the Internet this
downloading is done via a client-server protocol.

common protocols for files are FTP and HTTP (file transfer protocol and Hyper-text transport protocol)

uploading would be placing files onto a server from a client.
