I am tomorrow going to have an umbilical hernia operation done for me. The doctor will be using the surgical mesh with scope type surgery. I am a bit worried and I am not sure how much time I should expect to be in pain for healing. Any information will be helpful

Tomorrow it will be exactly one week since i had the SAME EXACT SURGERY. I had the square mesh inserted with the scope. I was sore for a few days (took my vicodin) and then flushed them...It is a little difficult to get from laying down to the UP POSITION...However, I am feeling better now. I try to get up and walk a little bit ~ so the muscles can heal... I am off work for three weeks (doctor's orders). My understanding is that it takes time for the mesh to blend-in with the inner tissue. Certain movements are a discomfort...Overall, I am able to sit in front of this computer , so I AM FEELING BETTER. GOOD LUCK
P.S. if you are taking prescription medication for your pain, buy prune juice, because the meds will make you constipated. I don't mean to gross you out ~~ but, it is true.

I too have had the same operation about 5 years ago or so. The initial sensation after surgery was a burning pain that only lasted about 12 hours. It was difficult to sit up from laying down or to lay down from sitting (using abdominal muscles). I was out of work for a few weeks, but after the first week was able to do many things that were difficult before the operation because of the hernia. Overall it was a much better procedure than I anticipated. I also suggest getting prune juice to counteract the effects of the pain meds. I was not on vicodin, I took codeine or darvocet.

The procedure is actually pretty easy. He will make a couple of small incisions....He will have long instrument which he will take the mesh through one of the incisions w/ the long grasper. Then w/ the other grasper he will take a needle and sew it on from the inside. Then close your incisions. Probably most of the pain will come from the gas that they will use to expand your stomach. (It has to escape :o) ) But you should be back in shape in no time.

i have had that executed. there is an incision scar above the tummy button. yet for the most area, it feels like a classic "innie" abdomen button. It does no longer influence having to pass to the bathroom...
