1) Don't install ANYTHING on your computer unless it is absolutely essential. Quit installing junk like Limewire.
2) Keep you computer up to date with all patches and virus definitions (have a subscription)
3) get a hardware firewall
4) Be more selective about who you open attachments from. Even PowerPoint files from friends can be infected.
5) Don't go to web sites you don't know anything about. If someone you don't know post a link like "Hey, check out my site" here on Yahoo Answers, and you go there, they got ya. DON'T DO IT!
6) Use an OS that is less likely to be targetted by malware like Linux or OS X.
7) Don't be naive.

Contrary to popular belief, checking for running processes will not protect you. Today's malware includes rootkits to supplant the process monitor on your computer with one that will NOT list the malicious process. This is a simple technique and can be installed by a worm. Malware writers do it all the time.

If you know there are none on your computer at the moment, just do not open unknown files from others or from the internet and do not allow anyone else to use your computer (via a password or other security).

Good question, besides regularly updating ur untivirus software and not installing suspect thingz am guessing there is very little u can do aspecially if someone who has acces to ur pc installs it.

I mean why would u even think of starting to kill processes?

quite simple
check for the programs running at back
press ctrl+ alt + del on windows xp
task manager pops up
see the process running
any spurious just kill the process by right click and selecting the option to kill it.
next get to msconfig by typing it on run
go to start up tab
stop the prg if its there for getting on at start up
apply and restart ur system

best of luck
