I know it a little bit crazy and its never really going to be THAT cheap, but I'd suggest flying RyanAir from Italy (Rome possibly) to London, Then catching a flight from London to NY, Then one from NY to Chicago/St. Louis or KC Directly. Either way you're probably looking at nearly 800 euros.

Probably your best bet is to NOT use any of the online booking agencies. A travel agent, either abroad or here in the states can help you better find the cheapest fair. They have access to last minute deals that these online agencies don't have. First, try ANY AAA (Triple A) office in the US or abroad (if there are any - I was in Rome last May and am not aware of any
AAA offices there, however I booked my ticket through them) and tell them you are abroad and looking for the most inexpensive ticket you can find, regardless of the number of layovers or the duration of the layovers, and go from there. The phone number for nationawide AAA (Triple A) is 1-800-222-4357, or, I believe, if you're calling from Italy, it is 011 800 222-4357. Best of luck

You might see about flights that connect your departures with Chicago or Dallas b/c both are pretty cheap flights into KC (especially Dallas to KC on Southwest or American Airlines). Not sure about flying into either from abroad though. Hope it helps.
