You are feeling the combustion of the 2 cylinders. The reflection of this sound and energy depends on where you are on or around the bike and what obstacles are around you to reflect it.

I've had two bikes, one a 600cc sport bike and the other a 1050cc triple sport touring and have never felt the pops you describe. Now my triple will make popping sounds when I rev it hard in idle and let the throttle off quick especially when its cold (No I don't do this often). My understanding this is a form of backfire. Not the standard big boom everyone thinks of but just a little unburnt fuel/air mix that gets into the exhaust.

What your describing I have never felt but then again I'm not usually standing behind my bike while it is running.
