Ok, here's my two-cents worth on the issue. It really does come down to the type of bike you want and how much you want to pay for it. For me, "resale value" is an acceptable gauge if your purpose in buying the bike is "what can I get for it when I sell it". I didn't buy my bike to park it in a garage for 10 years and sell it with 100 miles on it, I bought it to RIDE it.

Aside from being American made, I look at the manufacturers "track record". How long has the company been building motorcycles ? What is the lifespan of the bike ? And, how well are they made ?

Granted, Honda makes a good car and Yamaha makes great audio components and instruments. I personally don't want either. I want the company that built my bike to concentrate on BUILDING BIKES and therefore, are the best bikes in the world. None of the other motorcycle companies can say that they have been around since 1903, except Harley-Davidson. None of the other motorcycle manufacturers have motorcycles 30, 40 and even 50 years old STILL ON THE ROAD and, in better shape than some of the NEW metric bikes. As for "Craftsmanship", well just look around. Harley-Davidson motorcycles have always looked and sounded like nothing else. You used to be able to pick a Harley out of a crowd of Motorcycles from 100 yards away, not so anymore ! The "metrics" used to have their own individual styling until someone in Japan realized what people wanted and started mimicking Harley-Davidson's style and sound. Everyone wants to be like the best, but there can only be one "Best" .... The Original. Harley-Davidson.

The answer to this question will depend on what you want the bike for. Honda makes a good touring bike, that will give you excellent service IF you perform all the required maintenance on it, religiously. It will not hold it's value beyond about 4 years, even though it will still perform okay. It's a good open road bike, smooth and comfortable. Yamaha runs second to Honda with it's big bikes. Harley is going to give you the best value retention for the money. You will hear a lot of people say that Harley's break down. Untrue. Here's an example of one way to look at it. You see an awful lot of 10 - 15 year old Harleys that are for sale, but how many Hondas and Yamahas of the same age are out there? Not too many. That should tell you about the longevity of the bikes. Buy the bike that's going to suit your riding style and intentions, and the best that you can afford.

That's like asking if an apple, an orange, or a banana is better. They're each marketed towards a different type of person, and each company has their own line marketed towards different people. If you want a loud cruiser, get a Harley. If you want a decent and fairly priced somewhat sporty bike, get a Yamaha. If you want an outright sportster, get a Honda CBR or one of their other sports bikes. None is particurlarly better than the other, it just depends on what you're looking to accomplish with ownership.

To the "twinkie" at the bottom, I'm sorry that you take such issue with a statement of fact, but opinions are like armpits, everyone has two and they usually stink. I ride, as well, and am giving information based on my experiences. Have a good one.

Yamaha and Honda are very well built, as i used to own a Yamaha and with no problems at all.. But now Harley, they have been redesigned in the engine area so they are pretty much up there with other metric bike stats...Harley has a fantastic resale value, which may be something to consider also, though they cost more...

If you a bike that you can ride for 2 years and not loose any money, get a harley, great resale value. All the rest are good bike, just not worth the price they are getting for them, spend the extra to get the harley, you will be accepted more around any where with one.

Honda. They are the best-made, most reliable motorcycle on the planet.

Somebody tell that twinkie at the top that you can't apply feel-good
"coom ba ya" nonsense to motorcycles.
