usually minor league teams like to take names that represent the community they play in..for example the Norwich, being a seaport chose the "Navigators" as a moniker. It helps form a bond with the desired fan base. Other teams select a name based upon who they are affiliated with. For example the Rochester (NY) Red Wings took their name as a take off from their origional parent team, the St Louis Cardinals (Cardinals...Red Wings...get it?). Their affiliation has changed over the years, but they have kept the name because it has become part of their city's culture.

As opposed to some of the names of the Major League teams (i.e. Dodgers; Brewers; Marlins (there is a real fierce name); etc.)
Most teams have funny names - so I would have to say that they have funny names because that is just how all teams are.
