Any law enforcement agent can go up to any person and ask them for official papers if it has to do with a legitimate investigation (and some law agencies say they have that power regardless of teh situation). In the case of suspected Illegal residence, they can ask questions ...any questions to get the information.

So, Yes. They can ask.
