How can I transform computers files (word and excel) into read-only documents?

right click on the file in my computer and click on properties and then at the bottom of the properties window down at the bottom, theres a section call attributes and click the read-only checkbox and click OK

You can change a file to read-only by right clicking on it, and changing the properties to right-click. However any one reverse that by just rightclicking and unchecking the read only box.

To protect a document,
Open the document
Click on tools > options > security
In the Password to Modify box enter a password
Now only a person who has the password can modify the file
But don't lose the password or you are locked out also

Read through all the answers you have received. Open the file folder where the document(s) are saved, i.e. My Documents.
Do not open the document. Just right click on the document icon you want to change to read only, left click on properties, left click on read only, click on apply then click on okay. That will set the document to read only. A quick easy way is to create a new folder and copy/paste all the files you want to change to read only into your new folder. You might want to create a special folder for your word documents and one for your excel workbooks. Then click on file / select all / properties then select read only. This makes it a whole lot faster and all the documents you copied into you new 'special' folders will be changed to read only.
