After World War I, when The League of Nations divided the Middle East between British and French mandates, most Middle Easteners wanted The United States to be the governing sponsor that helped them become "civilized" nations. For instance, Syria's "Bill of Rights" during this time frame speaks directly to this issue. If The United States had complied, would the Middle East now be more democratic? What do you think would happen if The United States quit their support of Israel?

Jack, that is what I am thinking. If we had supported the Middle Easterners after World War I, then there would be no reason to have Israel in the Middle East, because we would have nothing but allies in the region. It was pressure from the Zionists that kept The United States from supporting Middle Easterns' plea for U.S. help in becoming recognized members of the International community. By supporting the institution of an Israeli state, the U.S. cemented what could have been a peaceful region into one of violence, hatred, and doubt over the International community's willingness to support them.

If the US stopped supporting Israel, Israel would no longer be seen as a threat to Arab countries. This would prevent radicalism in response to an Israeli threat. At this point, pressure would be turned toward Arab leaders to make their countries more democratic. I think that if we did not support Israel with money and arms, Arab leaders would be more likely to listen to us, see us as an honest broker and make their countries more democratic. There would be little reason for fundementalism if they did not percieve a threat.

Why would the region be Democratic - Israel is the only democracy in the whole region and only because of Israels amazing ability that transformed the backward area of then Ottoman domination.
Just the opposite is true only the countries that made peace treaties with Israel have started to develop and have quasi democracies look at turkey , Jordan and Egypt.
If Israel was not in the equation in the middle east then America and the rest of the world would have been help hostage to the whims of the oil rich dictators in the other middle east countries.

maybe you are trying to ask - if Hitler had succeeded in wiping out all the Jews would the world be a safer place?

You bring an interesting historical fact but it has little relevance to your question. At the present time the enemies of Israel have little interest in democracy. They want to see Israel wiped off the face of the earth. If the US quit supporting Israel the fighting would continue and there would be no more chance for democratization of the middle east than there is now.

I doubt that very much. There isn't even peace amoung Islams in the Middle East so the removal of Israel wouldn't suddenly create arewide democracy in the area. In fact, I do not beleive that nations governed by Islamic law will ever be truly democratic societies. Probably the best you could hope for would be some type of monarchy.

At the present time Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, except for Iraq. There is no reason that us withdrawal of support would enhance democracy in the Middle East, or for that matter to believe that Iraq will remain democratic once the US withdraws.

Israel is the only semblance of a democracy in the Middle East. Hence, the Arab citizens of Israel have greater freedom and opportunity than their brethren in the Arab world.

Araby has no tradition of or desire to take on the democratic values of the Western world.

(Look at Iraq if you're not sure what I mean)

The Israeli government needs to do it on there own but the us is supportive of there efforts.

If Israel gave back all lands to the time after WWI then they could join the EU and they would be then recognized and supported by the EU.

The Arab nations do not want that to happen.
Therfore when they give back land they get attacked.

The Arabs would've swarmed them before, now they may wait until Iran has enough weapons to take them out. Based on the history of the area the biggest mistake the U.N. ever made was creating Israel. The Arab states will never accept them, I doubt democracy would have taken hold but it would be peaceful without the Israeli's there.

First, the U.S. isn't going to stop it's support of Israel, or any other democracy in the middle east.

Second, the middle east is on a march towards democracy. Nothing can stop it, no matter how slow the progress seems.

The Middle East, it's governments and policies are founded
and directed by religions. This will always be a hotbed of
contention due to the fact that each party feels it has the
blessing of their religion to back up their actions.

If oil were not an issue, I would suggest we pull out of the
entire middle east conflict and let them do whatever they
want to one another.

However, realistically, this would affect us as well and also
pull us into the conflict in another form due to the fact that
we would be forced to defend our own interests.
