Yes. The first one was done in '63, but it stayed sort of hit or miss and experimental through the 70s. New meds introduced in the 80s saw recognition of liver transplantation as a standard clinical treatment for both adult and pediatric patients with appropriate indications. Liver transplantation is now performed at over one hundred centers in the USA, as well as numerous centers in Europe and elsewhere. One year patient survival is 85-90%, and outcomes continue to improve, although liver transplantation remains a formidable procedure with frequent complications.

Yes, it's a very common procedure. HOWEVER, to be a candidate, you have to go thru one tough screening process to even get on the list. Then, once they find a donor (they even do living donor transplants, because they found that if a lobe of a healthy liver is removed, it'll often regenerate.) and do the surgery, the receipent will be on medication (anti-rejection drugs mainly) for THE REST OF THEIR LIFE.

I don't know if they do liver transplants per se but I know they can take a portion of the liver from a healthy, living donor who is a match.
