If somebody supports a different team, their supporters are better than Sunderland's!
As you will know, Sunderland is a tight-knit community that has gone through economic hardships and is still in a state of relative economic decline. Passionate support for your football team is a way of fighting back against these problems.
Local rivalry, in Sunderland's case against Newcastle, helps generate support.
Finally, Sunderland has a long and proud footballing tradition.

They aren't the best, Newcastle fans are just as loyal. I'd also say fans of teams that just got demoted out of the Football League entirely and still has hope of success

Because you're a half-Irish team! Big Niall Quinn in charge now, Mick McCarthy's been and gone, and the future is with Dave O'Leary! Then you've got Jay-o McAteer and the like.

Sorry pal they aren't. Manchester City fans impress me more.
They went down 2 divisions and were still getting gates of between 25,000 and 30,000.
To me that is following your team through thick and thin.
