I'm asking because White Sox catcher Chris Widger was designated for assignment, supposedly because of poor game preparation.

Desingated for assaignment is in limbo, that the team has 10 days to decide what to do with the player (release him, place him on waivers or trade him.)

Designated for assignment removes the player from the 40 man roster then the team has 10 days to trade them if claimed by another team. If not claimed they can outright the player to the minor leagues. Releasing the player makes them a free agent to deal with any team they want. Some players are Designated for assignment more than once in a season i.e. Rod Allen or Raul Chavez but a team can only have 40 players on roster at one time with 25 on active roster.

if you are released, you are just done

if a player is designated for assignment, it means that the team has ten days to release or trade that that player, if neither of these happens, the players can accept a demotion to the minors. This is a thing that is used for players that have already gone through all their minor league options and can no longer ust e sent down directly.

DISIGNATED MEANS THE TEAM STILL OWN'S YOUR RIGHTS,THEY JUST REASIGN YOU TO ONE OF THEIR MINOR LEAGUE FRANCHISES ,RELEASED, THEY RELINQUISH ALL RIGHTS & YOU ARE NO LONGER UNDER CONTRACT N FREE TO SIGN WITH ANYONE
