Rarely... the pictures are old. The only people with access to satelites with live images are the CIA and NSA type groups. I would say 5 years or so.

Well think Google Earth is trying to tell me something, my workplace is a building site (rather than a bomb site like it is now), and I have been in there since 2000. My mates house in a different area is also a field, and he's been in there for 4 years. I am not sure that they are being updated, least not always on the free version. And how come some places are crystal clear yet others (Middlesbrough for one) can't see anything other that red blur?

Good question...and I'm afraid I don't have the answer. What I can tell you, though, is that the pictures are often replaced with older ones.
For instance, at Heathrow airport, it was once possible to see the one remaining static Concorde near the runway. Now, however, it looks as though Concorde is still in service, as there are several around the airport. That would make the Heathrow images around 3 years old.

I'm not sure about google earth, but i can say that google maps is no more than a year old, because of my local schools being rebuilt, and the position of my van at my house, just find where you are looking for then click on the satellite tab.
