Because the education system since the 70's has not taught anyone to strive to be better than anyone else. All sport was stopped because it may end with someone having to come last and that was the thin end of the wedge. Now we have tests to try to bring the standard up again, but with mediocrity in government what hope is there??

I missed the poll indicating that the UK is happy with mediocrity as well as the evidence indicating that they are in a state of mediocrity. Mediocre in what? And compared to what?

Probably because it takes a little bit of effort to be anything other than mediocre. It's an unfairly worded question by the way- people who are mediocre wouldn't recognise, let alone understand a word like mediocrity. (they might think you've miss spelt media city or summit... y'know. like)
