Simply put, 420 is a symbol of cannabis and its culture. Today, April 20th events are international, and 4:20 pm has become sort of a world wide "burn time".

420 is a drug reference to marijuana. I know 4:20 pm is a time you are supposed to smoke it, if that is your thing. You may have seen t-shirts that say "4:19, got a minute?"

In addition, April 20th (4/20) is some sort of pot holiday and users light up on that day as well.
