My friend said 'I'm too white for this' when an african-american person was 'rapping gospel' at our school. Is this racist?

I'm not african-american, by the way. My friend just told this to me when me and my other friend were dancing to the music.

Yes. Its kind of a rude statement if you think about it. Your friend seems to imply that she's too good for any other style(s). Tell her not to be so close-minded. I hope that the person that was rapping didn't hear your friend say that, and if they did it probably made them a little sad. You'll never change the mind of someone with those kind of thoughts, thats a point of view that only your friend can change. The only thing you can do to suppress predudice is ignore the stinkin' comments that it breeds. No one person is exactly the same but we are all brothers and sisters under the same sky.

That was an inappropriate thing for your friend to say to you. African American gospel has it roots in the "Underground Railroad" era, when blacks were escaping from slavery. The gospel words put to musical tunes or raps, were codes to inform other slaves the : Who, When, Where and Hows of getting help.
Also, it told stories of success, deaths and other news they needed to know. So, this is a history lesson for everyone to learn from. Maybe your friends just said that to be funny. Just let it go, and move on to bigger and better things...Life is too short for verbal name calling and nonsense.
PS....Let's just call this Gospel Code: The Grapevine Theory.

No one is too white especially if it comes to the gospel why would God care what color you are. If she thinks about you like that then she sees the color of your skin and not your friendship! Love is blind....so I thought? I would definitely say if not racist it was prejudice!

I dont think their racists.

I do think that the white person that said this wanted to make it clear that they felt that they didnt want to be associated with the black person or the activities that they were engaged in.

Perhaps the white person felt that they were better than the black person. Many white people do put themself on a higher social class than blacks.

I don't think so. What I take your friends comment to mean is:

I don't have the rythmn for this and as she/he was talking about themselves, no I don't think the comment was racist at all.
