Mikao Usui, a Japanese Tendai Buddhist & founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho, originally introduced symbols to Reiki only for those students who could not access and utilize Reiki through practice and dedication alone. He introduced 4 such symbols: DKM, HSZSN, CKR, & SHK.

Like any symbol, they are merely training wheels. As you progress through Reiki, you may actually come to find that using the Reiki symbols are no longer necessary.

The symbols themselves are usually held sacred by Reiki practitioners. With that said, many practitioners will not openly divulge them to you - it wouldn't do much good anyway, if you knew them or not - if you havent been trained in their use. It would be like someone giving you an airplane without you knowing how to fly it. Seek training in Reiki first. Learn how to access and utilize Reiki before digging deeper. Learn to walk before you run.

I would recommend Frank Petters books if you'd like more info. For the most part it is historically accurate (coming from someone who knows Japanese history as well as Japanese culture and Theology). I would also recommend The Reiki Sourcebook - another fairly accurate book on Reiki, not without its flaws.

I would suggest not getting books by Diane Stein or Maureen Kelly. Both of these authors present grossly misleading information presented as fact. If you know your history about Japan and Reiki, you'd know this to be the case (IMHO, these are typical new age versions of Reiki, presenting a lot of not so historically accurate info).

Hope this helps.

Yes Dianne Stein is very authentic. But you know reiki is more than the symbols. I have trained in many kinds of reiki mostly tibetan as I am a Buddhist, but I find that your intention is what will create the best results. Do not be too concerned with symbols, they are after all just symbols and nothing can really describe what reiki healing is.

Compassionate intention is paramount.

Craig.

The chakras are not specific to Reiki they are energy centers on the body and there are different opinions on them depending on what you read. I find the Kundalini chakras to be the most effieicent. In this system there are seven chakras along various parts of the spine from base to head. Each chakra being associated with a color, organs in the body and life issues. One does not need to really know these to do Reiki but it helps. Reiki symbols are a way to identify and to call upon different frequencies of healing energies much like we use misical notes to call upon specific sounds. There are many different healing energies and Reiki uses specific energies, these symbols help us to name and recognize the energies we use and when our mind gets distracted, drawing the symbols gives the mind something to do. There are many fine Reiki Master Teachers throughout India as Reiki is very popular there. As to where you will find one, I do not know, perhaps you can search online or just start asking around. A friend of mine from Holland took her level 2 Reiki from a monk somewhere in India. I do not know how she found him or where in India he was located. Good luck finding your teacher.
