Pros
- you're nurturing the next generation
- it's very rewarding seeing the children of your class learn new skills from you
- if you can get promoted to assistant headteacher or headteacher, the pay is very good
- great holidays and you'll never have to worry about who will be taking care of your own children over the weekends and school holidays as you'll be there
Cons
- there is a very distinct lack of respect from even the youngest of kids today
- you won't always be teaching in a nice school with plenty of resources
- attacks on teachers by kids and even their parents is at an all-time high

Pros: Lots of time off. In many places, very good pay. And, sometimes, deep personal satisfaction and the chance to really make a difference.
Cons: Dealing with disrespectful students AND parents. Many students don't want to learn. Besides getting crap from the students and parents, you get crap from the principal--and he/she's getting crap from the school board. You don't get much respect, and people don't realize how many hours you put in at home, preparing lessons and grading papers. All they see is how much time you get off.
I know what you're thinking: yes, I was a teacher, or, rather, a librarian/teacher in an elementary school. I left, took a huge pay cut and am now working in a college library. I love it! It makes a huge difference because these students WANT to be here.
In the end, it's a personal choice. I knew teachers who were only in it for the money and great benefits--I didn't want to live like that.

I love being a teacher! I start my 3rd year next month! The summers off, working with kids, working in my content area, and the steady income. This is a great way for me to make a difference and still pay the bills.
My biggest pet peeve with teaching is getting blamed for everything wrong with the education system. Since I was a student, the level of disrespect and poor behavior has skyrocketed! I didn't know it would be this bad. During my first year, I cried every day. Every day! It was a rough school. Since then, I have had great experiences and made friends with colleagues that I hope will last a long time.

Pros: You're changing the lives of children. You're inspiring them. You're making them think. You make a difference.
Cons: Lots of extra work you don't get paid for. Lots of time spent in and out the classroom after "school hours" and there's no such thing as overtime pay.
PS-fyi: TEACHERS DON'T GET PAID OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS!!!! So while the "vacation" sounds great, it's completly unpaid time and no money, means no fun vacations!!

Pro: Its an honest job, you don't earn a living off the sweat of others.
Con: The pay scale is based on an socio-economic culture which holds athletes and models in higher estimation.

I am a career changer after spending years as a computer consultant.
Pros: Often satisfying work, you control a lot of your time, respect from your colleagues and eventual job security
Cons: You must deal with MANY personalities on a daily basis and you take a lot of lumps at the beginning

1. Summer Vacation (minus any workshops, seminars, etc. you attend, but that depends on how dedicated you are)
2. Free Birth Control (work with kids all day may just keep you from wanting your own) :)
3. Oh yeah, and that whole thing of making a difference in children's lives. Somebody's gotta teach 'em, and I'm sure it rocks when you see one of your students go on and really make something of their life when they graduate.

pros - helping young minds grow; summer vacations; lots of holidays
cons - dealing with stupid little brats because parents expect you to raise them; sometimes unsafe; long hours; having to teach to the lowest common denominator, dragging down the bright and normal students.
