I totally agree with you on this! I work in a hospital and we tend to have spanish only speaking people who come in..... It is very frustrating when you can't communicate with these people, it makes me feel bad because I feel like I'm not caring for them like I should be but I have no stinking idea what they need or what to do for them!! alot of these people have been in the US for years, so why haven't they learned english yet? like you said, if we were to move to another country we would be expected to learn the language... how could you live in another country and expect everyone there to communicate with you if you don't know their language? it's just insane!!

Why should you HAVE to learn another language in live in another language? It would seem wise to learn the common language of whatever country in which you live as that guarantees you your best chances for success in most areas of life. Also, what evidence do you have that others are not trying to learn English?

English is one of the more difficult languages in the world. Many people that immigrate, legally and illegally, ARE working very hard to learn English as quickly as possible. English is the language of business in the US and anyone who wants to be successful in this nation would be advised to learn as much English as possible. Nonetheless, it takes time. Would you want people in another country, disparaging and harrassing you if you weren't learning their language as quickly as they wanted?

Most people are not particularly gifted at learning languages. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn even the most rudimentary elements of a language. It will take time for newly arrived immigrants to the US to learn English. Typically, the first generation to arrive in the US learns English poorly. Their children who grow up in this nation will learn English much more easily. Finally, their grandchildren will not only be every bit as fluent in English as grandchildren of non-immigrants, but they will also identify culturally as Americans. All it takes is time and understanding.

Because "when in Rome...." No seriously. Even if you dont use the native language very much, it is a courtesy to use it whenever possible. We lived in Germany many years ago. When we were out among the natives, most of whom speak English, were impressed that we made the effort.

"Others" do learn English, myself included.... When people think of immigrants, most automatically think of Mexicans, and worse, illegal aliens.

There are many many many legal aliens and naturalized citizens that respect the law of the land, culture, and language. Also, many intend to be "just like other Americans", contribute to the society, and enjoy the American way of life.

It is sad that illegals and legals from certain locations are making such demand as to force the rest of us to speak their langauge and accomodate their way of life and show no respect to those who are already here.

Because we make it easy on people who don't speak English. With the ATM's, automated phone services etc.....

Why learn a new language when you don't have to?

Our government blows.

Because every country have it's own believes and culture. You are going to them so be one of them ... Everybody can't change for you. It is same as dressing and ideas.... We have to respect other's ideas. If we try to make others like us .. they will be difference in between human identification...
