When my daughter was that age I struggled with her listening to Eminem's songs. I researched every song that he had written and talked to my daughter about all the sexist, violent stuff that he had written to date. We then talked about what he was writing at the time and that he had matured (to a degree) and that I thought him very intelligent. I could not condone his homophobic songs etc. but was willing to let her see 8 Mile when she was older (13) because it was out on video and I could watch it with her. I knew other kids would have the video at their houses.
Nelly Furtado appears to be going backwards in her direction. She started out well and seems to have gone the cheap pop sellout route indistinguishable from other female singers.
Her song is played on the radio. I don't think you can prevent it. The dialogue with you is more meaningful than the damage of her hearing the song.

Not really. I mean, I wouldn't want her listening to any music by Rhianna either. Check out the videos before you let her listen to the music. The videos are what are the worst. I hate watching videos and disturbing songs. Do what you can for your daughter. It's your job to guide her down the right path.

usually pre-teens listen to music not thinking of what the lyrics mean, they want to feel like a teen by listening to that kind of music. It shouldn't be a problem if she knows the lyrics either, when i was that age i knew the lyrics to a lot of songs without knowing what they ment, i just liked that style music.

In a word: no. Rap or slut-pop diva songs should NOT be played or listened to by impressionable minor children.
