Now just double-click on whatever characters you need (you can make the whole word in there, or just the accented characters), click Copy, and paste it into your e-mail or wherever.
If you're having trouble finding stuff, go into Advanced View, make sure Unicode is on, and try the dialog that brings up the Unicode subranges.
If you're on a Mac, most of the accents can be done with keyboard shortcuts. E.g., opt-E gives thís accent, opt-U gives thïs accent, etc. You can see the full list by going to the US flag icon in the menubar (enable it under System Preferences|International if it's not there) and go to the Keyboard Viewer or Character Palette.

You can use the number pad and alt key to make certain characters, however, it depends on which email you use.
ALT codes: Type ALT + 3 or 4 digit code to type accented characters. You can only use the numeric keypad, NOT the row of numbers across the top of your keyboard
ALT + ALT +
à 133 À 0192
â 131 Â 0194
ä 132 Ä 142
æ 145 Æ 146
ç 135 Ç 128
é 130 É 144
è 138 È 0200
ê 136 Ê 0202
ë 137 Ë 0203
î 140 Î 0206
ï 139 Ï 0207
ô 147 Ô 0212
œ 0156 Œ 0140
ù 151 Ù 0217
û 150 Û 0219
ü 129 Ü 154
« 174 » 175
The website http://french.typeit.org/ allows you to type words with accents and then you can copy-paste to your email.
ôœùûüÿ«»—àâçéèêëïî
äöüßÄÖÜ—
ʊʊŋʳʃθðʒˈˌæɑʌəəɜɚɝɛɪɪɒɔ
àèéìòóù«»„”—
ąćęłńóśżź
õóôúü—ãáâàçéêí
áéíñóúü¿¡—
another option is through Windows:
International keyboard (Win XP)
Open your Control Panel (via Start menu or My Computer)
Double click Regional and Language Options
Click Languages
Click Details
Click Add
Pick English (United States - International)
This method has the advantage of maintaining the QWERTY layout, with the following changes:
To type accent grave (à, è, etc.), type ` then the vowel.
Accent aigu (é), type ' (single quote) then e.
Cédille (ç), type ' then c.
Circonflexe (ê), type ^ (shift + 6) then e (or another vowel).
Tréma (ö), type " (shift + ') then o.
To type any of these symbols by themselves (e.g., single or double quotes) rather than above a vowel, type the symbol then hit the space bar.
To type French quotation marks « » use ctrl + alt + [ and ], respectively.

It depends on what language you want to type in. If you mean doing things like this: é è ë ö ê ç. Then it is really easy. Just tell me what language you want to do and I can help you.
