I have 3 kids and don't have much time to do new things. It seems like mostly everyone in my town has family nearby with whom they spends holidays, etc. How, other than church, can I meet people and get close to them so that me and my kids have a sense of family?

I think the best way is to try and make friends through your kids. If they are little, then enroll them in rec/leisure classes at a local community center, or if they're in preschool, then volunteer if you can to work in their classes which will give you a chance to meet other parents. How about your neighbors? If the kids play with kids in the neighborhood, then trade houses for playdates. If they are older and are involved in outside activities (dance, baseball, etc.) then get to know the other parents. Or find something you really like to do (write, dance, exercise) and take a class so you can meet people with those same interests. Are you a single parent? Look for other single parents. Volunteer at an organization that needs help. Are there any older people in your neighborhood who are lonely? Try to get to know them; who knows, maybe they are lonely and would appreciate taking on the role of grandparent figure to your children. These are just a few suggestions...good luck!

You can search the newspapers for community events that your family can participate in. You can get on your computer and hunt down family-orientated things that you can get involved in. Plus on line chat rooms or sites that can hook you up to family type things. Your computer is your best friend right now since you are so limited in what you can get to.
