I think of poverty as not having love and support from family and friends. Money is a necessary evil (I think Slash may have said something along similar lines!), but with or without it you can never be 'poor' if you have good relationships with those who mean the most to you, those you treasure. I don't have much family, really, it's just my Mom, my little sis and me, and we've made it through all sorts - our life has been one almighty hell of a rollarcoaster! - the only reason why any of us are where we are today is because we stood by each other, for better and worse. Everyday I count my blessings that I have my Mom, sis and my best friend, Fliss.
In fact, we've just moved to a new town in a part of the country where we don't know a soul, but, last week we went to a bar and bistro for a drink in the afternoon and this old guy, who was so sweet, started talking to us. For some reason we just clicked - we were all instant friends - and we spent hours in the sun with a few bottles of wine chatting about everything and nothing, and he was of the same opinion - that you could never go far wrong with close family and friends at your side. He saw how close us three are and thought it was 'beautiful' and that we were very lucky to have that. And, believe me, he knows what he's talking about.
I do all I can to help people, because like you, I care very much about people less fortunate than myself. The people I sympathise with the most though are those who literally have no-one, they're not just moneyless but they're alone and that is the worst state of poverty.

After much thought I would have to say "poverty" is determined by the individual/individuals. Although there are countries that fall into an economic poverty level, that does not automatically mean the "people/peoples" emotional and mental outlooks on their daily lives is at a "poverty" level. I've seen video of whole villages, who by the looks of the conditions of their shelters/homes, sanitation and food supply appear to be accustomed and content with that which is all around them. That "poverty" as we call it is there to meet and greet them every single day of their lives, they know nothing different. I wonder "if" you have never had something that everyone else thinks you must have or need, do you know that you're lacking or missing out on something?? Poverty throughout the world, whether by U.S. standards or another countries standard for their population, will always vary. What is considered "below the poverty level" for a person living in the U.S., is actually considered wealthy to a person living in a remote village in many parts of the continent of Africa. The stigma that the word "poverty" carries will always be undefinable.....not unless you are the person wearing the other persons "shoes"!!!

Poverty is an economic condition of lacking both money and basic necessities needed to successfully live such as food, water, education, and shelter.
You might make $50,000, but if you live in a place with a high cost of living and/or have to support a family and you do not ave the money to provide food, clothing, a stable home (ie able to pay the bills), you're living in poverty.

Poverty is not having money to feed yourself. If you can't afford milk and bread then clearly that's being in poverty, even if you live in a home.

Poverty is never being sure you will have enough to eat, wondering how you will pay the rent, working hard for little, but still having personal dignity and grace.

i say poverty is when you have to struggle just to survive. Countless familys through out the world are going through this right now and we can help by giving to certin organizations that give back to the comunity(sp?). Every one deserves the chance to not just survive, but thrive.
