Muscle is heavier than fat!! Don't worry about the number on the scale, concern yourself with your body fat content.

Muscle is more dense than fat - so the same amount of muscle will weigh more than fat.

Muscle burns energy to live. Having more muscle will cause your body to burn more energy and fat.

If you work your muscles, you will gain some and thus gain weight. If you do a lot of exercise, you can gain a lot of weight in muscle mass.

When working out, you will gain some lean mass and yes, it will APPEAR that you are gaining weight. Get some Fat Calipers and test your bodyfat vs. stepping on a scale...just throw it out.

As far as how much can you gain..depends, in what time period?

With the proper (STRICT) diet and intense weight training the average male can expect 30+lbs during his first year..then it starts to get harder and harder to put on mass. Pro Bodybuilders are happy with 4-6lb per year.

Women CANNOT get huge no matter what they lift / eat like us guys can, they just don't have the body chemistry to do so. (testosterone)..unless they inject a butt load.
