I started taking Depo-Provera back in May. I have had incredibly heavy and painful periods for as long as I can remember. My doctor had me try many different birth control pills, and none of them seemed to have any effect on my period whatsoever. So I called her up one day and requested to try the shot, as I had just got out of school for the year, and knew that attempting to remember taking a pill between a job and summer classes would be impossible.
Luckily over these past few months I have had no side effects at all. My question is I am due to get my next shot this upcoming Monday. I noticed a few days ago I had a bit (extremely small) of bleeding, but thought nothing of it. Then yesterday I had a decent amount of bleeding, and realized this might be my period. There is nothing there today however.
Has anyone undergone these circumstances, or know if this will increase in intensity, maybe keep spotting, or is it possible not to have one after the first month? Any insight?

Just an extra note, when I said I never had any side effects, I never had any spotting, weight gain (I actually lost weight), no acne, moodiness (my extreme PMS went away, thank goodness). But I've never talked to anyone who hasn't had side effects. Has anyone else out there had a good run with Depo?

Some women have no side effects, some have horrible side effects. If you are one that doesn't have the side effects, count yourself lucky.
There is nothing wrong with not having a period when you first start on a new birth control product. The spotting could be your bodies way of telling you that you need another shot. Your periods will more then likely be lighter and less frequent. This is normal for Depo. Talk to you doctor if you are really worried. No one can help you better then them.

I was on Depo for 4 years and loved it. Like some of the other responses said, everyone reacts differently. Every now and then I would have a few days of spotting or bleeding but it was rare and it was not accompanied by cramps or anything else so I didn't worry about it too much.
There is much debate on the safety of depo. Many women have had problems when one it for a long period of time. Some say that it can cause fertility problems later in life. When I went off of the Depo my dr put me on Seasonal. It is a pill but you only get your period 4 times a year. My doctor liked it more because she was worried that the big dose of hormones at once might cause problems in the long run. She also like the idea of me having an occasional period to make sure that everything gets cleaned out and is still in check. But that was her opinion. It sounds like you are doing well on the Depo. But if you have any concerns you should really talk to you Dr and the two of you can determine what is best.

I took my first shot and started to spot in about the second month. I did'nt have any of the other side effects weight gain, moodiness. I stopped taking the shot because the spotting started without any notice anytime, sometimes heavy sometimes not, but I kinda like to know when my period is coming. Also there are now some reports that Depo isn't so good for you. I was glad to come off the shot and back to my trusted pills.

I was on Depo a few years ago, too. Sometimes, especially when I was due for my next shot, I would get my period. It was not real heavy though. However, my doctor took me off of it because it can cause depression.

Spotting is a definate side effect of this hormone. I was on the shot for 6 months myself and absolutly hated it. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. However, I know a few girls that had no such problems! Good luck, don't worry and if you are worried, ALWAYS ask your Doctor!

My whole family is on depo my sister just started and she spots when its time to get her shot again she was also spoting in between shots and the doctor said her body was getting used to the hormones so she was fine. WARNING my cousin was on it a bled for a month and the doctor still blamed it on her body getting used to the hormones GOOD LUCK

Depro-Provera affects different people differently. You may have little no period while getting accustomed to it and you may bleed profusely. You might need to get it a little sooner each month. Most importantly you need to share this information with your doctor or PA. They will guide you accordingly and more importantly offer a lot of comfort. Good luck to you!
