That all depends on the kind of wax. The most common wax is parafin which is made from crude oil. Because its made from crude oil it does not burn clean and has by-products that do in fact go into your lungs. If you burn all-natural waxes like soy wax or palm wax, the wax burns 100% clean, the only bi-product would be from the burning of the cotton or paper based wick which is very minimal.

The wax doesn't evaporate, it just loses it's moisture. That's what evaporates, and the wax stays there melted, harder than ever. But, the content of the moisture certainly gets inhaled. That's the scent in scented candles. The essential oils are actually healthy, but if there is anything else in there that's not so healthy, like some sort of artificial frangrances or dyes, then there could be cause for concern.

The other thing that enters the air is the contents of the wick. I know that when I burn certain types of wicks, if the wicks are too long a length, I get soot in the room, over time. I'm sure that the dust gets inhaled. I read that you should try to keep the wick about 1/4 inch or so, so that it doesn't do that, and also so it won't burn too hot, and melt the candle too fast.

In general, many types chemicals are released into the air by burning a candle. Wax no longer exists as it has been converted, due to the heat, into other chemicals, such as carbon dioxide. It is likely that you will inhale some of these chemicals. One way to know is if you smell something when the candle burns. That is a chemical released into the air that has entered into your nose.

Look at any candle holder that encloses the candle in a glass cylinder and there's the answer ... soot, same as a chimney fire. Mexican women in rural areas suffer from lung cancer even though they don't smoke, but they do cook over wood fires in dwellings that just have a hole in the roof.
