When the game was invented in the late 19th century the strategic emphasis of the game at that time earned it the name of football. It was accurately descriptive of the game in those days because drop-kicks were common. Todays strategies are based mostly on passing plays, then run plays, and when their backs are against the wall a team will attempt a field goal.

It's very strange that most of the world assumes we Americans "bastardized" the name of football AND coined the term "soccer" for international football. When association football was invented, an Englishman-whose last name was Brown-came up with the term "soccer" to differentiate the game from American football. If we did name it soccer, why does the world market the game under the name?

I have learned long ago to NEVER underestimate the potential of arrogance in some people, as evidenced by some of the answers here.

Lots of bitter little Europeans here. It's unbecoming, really.

Because the ball is a foot long. Seriously. Hence the name. And the international favorite, football, wasn't named football until the 20th century. So we actually started calling it "football" first.

The real answer to your question is lost in history.I have heard that it was created much like rugby was. Where someone just picked up the ball and went from there. Keep in mind the forward pass was a later addition to American football. Originally all advancing of the ball was done by carrying it forward.

Because like everything else they copied the idea from someone else. England had Rugby Football which was copied, changed a bit and renamed an American invention.

Actually the game has changed a lot in the last years. It had a different form of playing and now it has changed.

But still its true the name doesnt relate to the game at all...they should change the name...well that will be a big deal.

Because it used to be a lot more like rugby. The game has changed, the name has remained the same.
