To expand our horizons, we have to break out of our comfort zone -- the area of our own knowledge and experience in which we've been nurtured and have thrived. Pain comes from breaking the shell to step out into a larger world.

I believe that we are all equipped with prior experience which keeps us from approaching new knowlege objectively; that is the shell. These are defense mechanisms, and we do not give them up readily. It takes courage to drop our defenses and be accepting of the unfamiliar.
