One of the basic beliefs of orthodox Christians is that tthe Bible represents a written and authoratative revelation from God. It is according to Christians absolute truth. What reasons can be given to defend this belief? Why do people believe this?

Christians believe the Bible to be God's word for it internal witness to its truthfulness. In 2 Timothy 3::16, Paul states that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, this needs some clarification. By inspired, it is not meant that God didn't use the authors as robots who just wrote down what they learned mechanicaly, but rather He dictated what to write and using their different styles and personality conveyed His message. God superintended the writings for accuracy, but allowed for styles. There are many examples of where God spoke and His words were written down, the first such example is in Exodus 20 where God sets down the Ten Commandments, how they were written down is anyone's guess; though Cecille B. DeMille had his idea.
In Leviticus 1:1; 4:1;8:1;11:1;16:1;Numbers 4:1, 17, 21;6:1, 22; 9:1; Deuteronomy 29:1; Isaiah 8:1-5. This is a very small sampling of God speaking to man, about His will and His word. In the New Testament there are also examples of the authors telling the readers what they have seen and heard are truthful. Luke 1:1-3; 2 Peter 1:16; 1 John 1:3 John 19:35; In many case the author cites specific events that occurred to bolster their truthfulness. Luke 3:1 John used in John 5:2,3 makes reference to the pool at Bethsaida. The second reason for believing the Bible is the word of God is external evidence, referring back to John 5:2,3, Archaeological excavations have unearthed that very site and confirms the accurarcy of John's account. Archaeology is the Bible's greatest ally, many cities and empires mentioned in the Bible have been unearthed to establish the veracity of the biblical accounts. The Hittites, long thought to be a mythical race, was discovered back in the 19th century, not only did the Hittites exist, but had an empire. What really bolsters the claims of the Bible is, even hostile eyewitnesses verify the testimony of the gospel writers concerning the resurrection. In Matthew 28:11-15, the guards who had been watching the tomb came to the priest for help, because Roman law dictated that sleeping on a guard watch was punishable by death. So the priests concocted the lie the disciples stole the body. This lie borders on the absurd, for several reasons. First, the tomb was sealed with the seal of Rome, to break it was to bring the wrath of Rome upon yourself. Second, the Roman guards were an elite fighting force; there were 16 guards at the tomb that watched in groups of 4, while the others rested with there heads towards the guards so as to be roused immediately if needed.
Third, the tomb was sealed witha stone(boulder)estimated to be at least 2 and half tons in weight.(two engineers from Georgia Tech went to Palestine for that purpose). Fourth, the stone was rolled down into a gulley where it would remain unmoved. Fifth, eleven scared disciples would have to try to overcome or sneak by the guards. In addition, to move the stone would have been a monumental task alone. A fourth reason is the Bible portrays man as he really is, it doesn't gloss over problems. For example, David's adulteress relationship with Bathsheba and subsequent murder of her husband Uriah the Hittite. See 2 Samuel 11, 12 for the account. David was a man after God's own heart, but how could that be? Because when David realized he had sinned he confessed it to God. Read Psalm 51, this recounts David's confession of his sin. The most important reason is that Jesus is into changing lives, just ask anybody who has experienced having Jesus in their life.

I would have love to have given you a star... I gave it to charity instead. Your so wrong. You read book written by human thoughts and hand, and you clearly believe the non-fictional thing you've read. Your statement clearly prove that you do not know or understand the Word of God, via the Bible. You stated hateful, misogynistic and self-contradicting - only those whom have never studied the word, could think the bible are hateful. The Old Testament clearly have some angry responses from God, but the New Testament is full of his love for man. The bible was written by human, filled with the spirit. But what you may ask is the Spirit. The Spirit is God with us, he accepted us and give us truth, knowledge and wisdom. He gave me a lot more, love, humility and a will that belongs to God. Now, when I pray and asked for guidance, I am gifted with whatever I've asked for. I rarely have to do anything to get a response. Did humans response to me. I spend 2-3 hrs a day, studying the bible, the Koran or other religious denomination, and have knowledge of God's work in peoples life. I don't expect you to know God, it belong to those people whom know what it feels live to hold your first child, to look at them for the first time knowing full love. It a love that hurts, a hurt that one feels in wanting to be under the banner of christ - a pain that consist purely of love, and knowing that you are loved. I am a christian and I am loved.

I believe it because that's what I was taught from childhood and throughout my life.. The Bible has accounts of things that are going on in the world today.. To me for a book to be written that long ago and to know what was going to happen over 2000 years later I think that's all I need to believe The floods earthquakes, wars in the middleast and even Israel's war is accounted for in the Bible..

The Bible has proven itself accurate. The Bible also says that it is God's word. It is a matter of faith. In life, you will believe in something. You need to choose what you will believe in.

I don't think people believe it word for word. However, I do think that people, myself included, believe it is the word of God as interpreted by those who wrote it. Remember, God is Omniscious but we are not.
