In the 70's he could have lived in the style they were displaying on the show for $60-$70K. Of course this was a helluva good salary back then.
It helped, of course, that Alice the housekeeper was boinking the butcher so they always had free meat.

Well..lets do this. the actual house for the outside shots was at 11222 Dilling Street, North Hollywood, CA. The fictional address in the show was 4222 Clinton Way, somewhere in California. So lets assume is was a suburb of LA. The time frame was around 1969, 70, 71ish.
He was an architect, nice house, ok (not great cars by a stretch) and new cars. 1968 Dodge Polara convertible in the pilot; a 1969 Plymouth Fury III in years one and two; a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda convertible in year three; a 1972 Plymouth Barracuda convertible in year four (actually, a modified 1971 model), and a 1973 Chevrolet Caprice convertible in year five.
1970ish LA suburb..with all of the aforementioned. The Mean Average Annual income in LA County in 1969 was about 42K. So I'd ballpark Mike at about 90K.

Actually....my guess is really only about $60K per year at most.
I was one of 8 kids - and was just about the same age as "Marcia" while the series was running. My step-father was an engineer at Lockheed and we lived in a 6 bdrm house, took yearly vacations, had a housekeeper...my mother didn't work outside the home...etc. We bought this home in 1969 for $42K. And I remember vividly when he got a raise to $1,000 per week ($52K per year) I was a sophomore in high school at the time - 1972. We lived in Northern California at the time.

He worked on a lot of projects that seemed to pay by the deal, so I am guessing it varied based on his workload. But..based on factors you mentioned, I am going with 85k a year. Remember, back then house ran in the $20k's to $30k's range for a modest house.

He must not have been doing that well. I never saw a toilet in that whole dang house.
What. Did they use the gas station down the street?

I think he pimped Alice the Housekeeper out to the neighborhood, to supplement his income.
I am special too =)

I'm guessing above $100K. He was an architect after all.
