Edward Norton's character (forgot his name) didn't die because the bullet went thru the side of his neck, missing his esophagus and vocal cords (I know a guy that did the same thing). Tyler Durden (Edward's alter ego) was simply a figment of his imagination. He died because Edward finally learned to contol himself-to do this he had to let go of all his fears (thereby shooting himself). Because Tyler never really existed, he never really died- he simply ceased to exist. It is a really good movie about the duallity of mankind-we all have a Tyler Durdan in us- sort of a modern day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide story.

I never got that one either! My best guess so far is that if Tyler Durden is Jack, then when Jack shot himself the bullet would also go through Tyler. So I'm thinking that the bullet went partially through Jack and the rest of the way through Tyler. That movie was confusing, awesome, but confusing. I'm still trying to figure stuff out.

hmmm, how many questions have you had about this movie? i own the movie but haven't watched it in a while. i can only assume you must enjoy lots of closure at the end of movies? i don't think there is anything to get. people survive gun shot wounds all the time. it was a fantastic movie. it's classic.

Well the whole point of him shooting himself in the head was to get rid of Tyler (aka Brad). If he had just died it wouldn't have made a very good ending would it?

I would seroiusly suggest reading the book. there are subtle differences that add up to making the whole story a little different - including making the ending much easier to understand... I can't give it away!!!
