Pre-pay is nice but you pay more per minute than other phones. If you are someone that will not use it that much then pre pay is the way to go. If you have a service called Cricket. That is the best deal. You get unlimited local and long distance with free text messaging for 45.00 per month. No contracts.

any retail outlet which sells phones
I'd rather buy from a well know company which specializes in cell phones in case anything needs to be done to the phone dealing with repair wise.
i personally think that a prepay phone is better than a normal phone because to me it has lower rates.

prepaid phones are good for people who don't use the phone a lot, and for people who wants to keep the phone for emergencies only. what's good about it is that you don't have to sign up for a contract, and there are no monthly bills.

i used to have a verizon and t-mobile plan before, but i didn't get that much phone calls, so i switched to prepaid. if you go to authorized dealers in your area, expect to find out that phones are sold in full prices (because there is no contract) therefore more expensive, but you are able to save money on bills. i suggest you try your local target store, i bought my prepaid phone there for only $39.99 and it's working great.

each services have their own ups and downs when it comes to prepaid.

cingular -- offers 3 kinds of prepaid. one is go phone pick your plan -- where in you pay a monthly bill but you don't sign up for a contract, meaning you can cancel it anytime.
go phone 10 cents -- they charge you $1 a day on days you use the phone, but you get unlimited mobile to mobile (cingular to cingular phone calls are free) and each minute is 10 cents.
go phone 25 cents -- does not deduct $1 each day but the calls are 25 cents

verizon prepaid -- they have easy pay which you pay a monthly bill with no contract, but there is a roaming charge of $1 per minute. let's say you travel to another state -- they charge you $1 per minute you use the phone. rip off right?
verizon prepaid -- is 10 cents per minute, but there is a $1 a day charge even on those days that you don't use the phone. (another rip off) what's good about verizon is the service.

t-mobile: they offer gold rewards to loyal prepaid customers. when you've reach a quota (i think $250) any amount you put in your phone lasts 1 year. (the rest -- cingular and verizon, maximum is 3 months).

right now, im using t-mobile prepaid because of the expiration.
to be continued.

Prepaid is for those who have minimal usage. Especially those who do not call but only receive phones. If you call a lot then take a postpaid because that's the one with much cheaper calling rates or tariffs.
The biggest advantage with the postpaid cell is that you can talk as much as you want & you are not strangled for talktime. This is particularly helpful in emergencies.
You can mail me if you want details for a connection in India. But please give details about your usage.
Happy talking
Abhishek

I guess a pre pay phone has its up sides but you end up paying a lot per minute plus connecting fees and all that crap. I would go with a network.
