help. i think my sister is mentally ill. I'm not sure if i'm being extreme calling her that. She prays every 15 minutes. She believes people are reading her mind. I catch a lot of the time talking to herself and making facial expressions for no reason. She asks me not to stand in a particular part of her room. what am i supposed to do?

Well, first, the internet isn't the best place to seek this sort of advice. But I'm sure you know that and are using it as an additional source. I would say it depends on her age. If she's too young to make rational decisions, take her to the doctor. If she's older, maybe she can explain to you her motives. It sounds like an extreme case of OCD. This can come in many forms. Is your family religious? This seems to be a prime factor in it as well. I believe she feels extra vulnerable, given that she prays (for help?) and feels like people are reading her mind (worry?) and she doesn't want you standing in certain parts of her room (ritual or obsession?) talking to herself (to calm down?) and making faces (force of habit that's hard to break?). I don't know. Consult a doctor... this is quite odd.

Leave her alone if that is what she asked of you. It's impossible to diagnose anyone that way and it's intrusive to look at a few signs as a sign of mental illness. That is why mental illness "diagnoses" are so rampant. If you think she's over the top, talk to your parents to get her some help.

Sounds a little odd to me, being a layman. Have you considered asking a professional for advice?

are you sure that drugs are not involved?

sounds like she needs some counseling - and a thorough check up with a medical doctor -

how old is she? - we all beleive different things in our early years, making up stories to explain those things that we do not comprehend -

as to what you should do - talk to your parents if you can -
