Why is the low E string, the one closest to you when you are playing #6 and the small E string, the farthest away #1

It seems it should be the other way around. I have been playinf for 30 years and no one had been able to give me an answer

It goes by the gadge of the strings. And i know someone who plays the guitar backwards. So for her i doesnt matter.

My guess is that the 6th string is on top because you need more stregth to push the string down. Plus your pinky finger cant hold down the 6th string as well as your middle finger or pointer finger. Since your middle and pointer finger can hold the 6th string down better it is placed up top because your fingers can reach it better.

That was a guess and I hope I gave you an idea maybe. I have been playing for a year now and thats what I figured out.

Its all in the scale. The top E is top in pitch not necessarily top of where you play.
