First off the meds don't get rid of the pain completely! If this is the first baby the epidural could begin to fade right as you need to begin pushing, but this is good this way you have the full ability to push the baby out. The pain isn't as scary as most lead you to believe, but its no walk in the park either. My children were worth the pain and that is how most moms feel! :) You feel a lot of soreness and tenderness in the vaginal area after birth (think about all the stretching it has to do to facilitate the birth) and if you rip a little or have to have an episiotomy that spot is especially tender. If you are asking because you are preggy, congrats! It is something to be treasured! LOL I wish I could get pregnant again. Being pregnant and giving birth is a great joy of life that I wish all could experience. Good Luck and god bless!

The majority of the pain is the labor. Once you get past the birth you are a LOT better. I found though that having very little labor pain because of an epidural -- the birth itself hurt worse. I had a birth with nothing for pain and the labor was bad the but birth itself was easier. Both times though I felt much much better after the baby born.

the epidural is the way to go, as opposed to natural or the innerthecal -not sure of the spelling, or anything given in an I V. the epidural should numb you from your waist down to your toes, so there is no pain involved during the labor, but after the labor is over and the epidural wears off you will still have a sore bottom/vagina, assuming that it is a vaginal delivery, and you will be sore in your stomach as well, and if the nurses are doing their jobs, they will be coming in periodically and massaging your belly, about where your belly button is, to make sure they your "fundus" remains firm and that you aren't bleeding excessively, and just so you know... this will hurt!! not as much as the labor pains would but it will hurt, but it has to be done so you don't bleed more than you should...

Ok see here's the thing...an epidural is given thru a needle inserted between two vertebra in your spine. After you are thru delivering the baby and the placenta, the epidural needle is removed, and the effects of the drugs will wear off shortly thereafter. You will have pain in your vaginal area, but it shouldn't be too intense. If it is, the doc can give you other pain meds to manage it. If the doc has to perform an episiotomy though, you may experience a LOT of pain. Thankfully I didn't need an episiotomy.

I didn't take any pain meds when I gave birth and right after my baby came out all the pain I experienced while pushing was completely forgotten! All I could think of was my baby and I was surprised actually 'cause I saw those videos where the women were all smiles right after their babies were born and I though that would absolutely not be me.
I couldn't imagine being happy after going though all that pain and agony. But that's exactly how it was!
My dr. had to cut my perenium so I was injected with something to numb that pain and when it wore out I did feel burning but it wan't unbearable.
Btw, epidurals and other pain meds actually prolong labor 'cause they stop your body from performing it's normal duty while in labor. Pain in actually a very necessary process and while I was experiencing it I was glad 'cause I knew my body was doing what it needed to do to birth my baby.

With my first baby I had the epidural. My labor was very long and I pushed for two hours and felt like I was hit by a truck afterward, but it was about two hours afterward. With my second baby I had no drugs at all....this time I felt much better after labor. Was of course a bit sore in my bottom, and felt like I had done a round of sit ups or something. Each labor is different for every woman. It depends a lot upon your physical condition as well too. Like everyone has said once you see your baby, all that other stuff fades away all that matters is that he/she is here.

No. The epideral doesn't just wear off at the snap of your fingers. It happens gradually over anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or more. Also they begin giving you stron pain meds every 3-4 hours immediatly after delivery. Usually percocett , percodan or lortab... all of which are strong and if taken regularly will prevent major pain. You will have some discomfort but nothing like what you experienced in labor and nothing like what it would be w/o meds.

Well, if you've had an epidural for a vaginal birth, you will begin to have some perineal pain, but, unless there are complications, this should not be much. Usually Motrin/Advil will take care of it, and it only lasts for a couple days.
If you've had a C-Section, then obviously, your stomach would hurt, but then you would have narcotics available to you while in the hospital.

My wife was fine the day of the labor(s). A little weak, but she went potty and everything. She was a little sore from a slight tear the second and third time, and quite sore from the episiotomy the first time.

After you deliver the baby, with an epidural or not, ( Ive had both).
the pain of contractions goes away. You feel great. You may have some cramping (thats really no worse than when you have your period) and you may be sore but thats really it.
