Women are very competitive, by nature. When/if they feel threatened, personality or professionally, they often "fight back" by what ever means they imagine will most hurt the competition. Men are often guilty of same but in an office environment, women most often make up the majority of the population, I have found that office gossip and politics is a definite sign of not enough work to do. My experienced advice to you would be to stay out of it. Keep your head down and work hard. Don't listen to it and don't contribute to it. It all comes out in the wash, just make sure you don't get wrapped up and allow yourself to be hurt by it.

In my experience, both men and women are guilty of being the instigators in office politics. However, in my office, there are more women than men. Perhaps that is why you think this? Also, if I were to speak in broad, general statements such as you did, for the most part, men will fight in the open and have been taught that is manly and acceptable, while women are raised to "be nice" and fight behind the scenes more often.

Because men are capable of achievment without having to resort to office politics.

Men stay out of it, because when the women find out, it gets turned back on him 10 fold. Who wants that?

Aside from that...
simple numbers. More women than men in offices. Therefore, more likely to be involved.

Are you speaking from your own personal experience in office politics? That's a small grouping for such a sweeping statement.
