There are some permanent magnets for sale on the net (neodymium?) that are so strong that they have to ship the BIG ones SEPARATELY ... because otherwise someone might get hurt.
Truth!
But the strongest magnets are electromagnets, with huge windings and huge currents through them. MRI machines generate very large fields.

If you have a broken hard drive or you can get one that you no longer use, crack it open and you will find possibly the STRONGEST magnets I have ever seen... they are about 1-1/2" in length but extremely strong! Compared to speakers magnets of the same size, these are easily 10 times stronger... There should be two inside the hard drive... just to give you an idea, these magnets are so strong that a 10 or 11 year old kid would struggle pulling them apart :-)

I would say, the magnets used in the Medical industry:
CAT Scan and MRI Machines.
I'm sure there are others out there, but I don't much about them at this point.
PS...oh yeah, they also use Magnets for some new roller coaster rides, they are pretty powerful too. So between all I mentioned.
I don't know which is the strongest.

earth's natural magnetic field is about 0.5G (Gauss)
strongest cheap ferrite magnets have a field strength at their poles of around 1000G
MRI machines have about 150,000 G
Check out this site for dangers of an MRI machine

back to your question, NEODYMIUM are the strongest man made magnets.
Earth magnets or lodestones are magnets found in nature

strongest magnets are the superconductors. these are used on the roller coasters, railways, and other mechanism today. Superconductors are magnetic elements (known as transition metals*)which are at very low temperature. I.e. Iron at - 1000 degrees. They become superconductors instead of normal conductors and can hold very strong magnetic fields. Powerful to than of magneto!
I wish i can answer you more, but currently busy schedule, look forward to your other questions.

I've only heared about them once... I think its the earth magnets. Can't remember if thats the name or not. It was on Mythbusters once when they were doin' a thing about credit cards and seein' what type of magnets would whip out all the info on the cards... and the earth magnets were the only one that would do anything to the credit cards...

the strongest magnets are the electromagnets.they r made by pasing electricity through iron.its strength can be increased or decreased by increasing or decreasing the electric current respectively.
