Religion.

Religion has killed so many people in the past that it makes you wonder.. if there is a God, would he/she/it be happy?

Any religion that believe it's ok to start holy wars is immoral in my opinion.

Additionally.. George W. Bush may very well be one of the reasons we're on the brink of WWIII. Contrary to popular neo-con belief, it's not that he's a republican, I don't give a crap what politcal party he is. I may be a democrat but I'm telling you, if we had a democrat in office and he was doing the same crappy job Bush was doing, you better believe I'd be screaming "Impeach!" all the same.

Mass media. Where before ideas took decades to coalesce and a population was slow-to-anger, now a sound-bite-driven world can listen in for the latest hate-inspiring act to drive them forward. Does anyone honestly think WWII could ever have ended in a lasting peace if the media was filling up the news screens with daily reminders of the last intolerable act the enemy was perpetrating? That kind of intense scrutiny can only breed hate. Particularly when the actions most likely to receive media coverage are the extreme actions which are judged 'news-worthy'.

Want an example of how horribly biased we have become? Think of the words liberal and conservative. How many hateful stereotypes have we been shown for those appellations? The reality is that -most- liberals are -not- elitist snobs or poor people looking for handouts. They are usually normal people who care about trying to help others. Most conservatives are not Bible-thumping rednecks, either. They are usually normal people who try to provide for their families and care about protecting them. Yet the media teaches us differently. It teaches us to hate each other and distrust each other over exaggerations and extremists. Sad, really, because with honest reporting, most people would be shocked with how much everyone has in common. But that doesn't sell papers, does it?

You cannot threaten that which does not exist. Nor ever did.

This world, as long as humans have inhabited it has known hate, derision, war and famine. Religion plays a large roll and has since it's creation.

Currently, that which hinders any chance we could achieve world peace is Islam. And not just fanatical Islam. The very fact that those who are not "fanatical" remain silent to the bloodshed and hatred makes them as bad if not worse than those who saw the head off an innocent contract worker.

Besides George Bush?

The US acting like a bully to the world. We make policy that may be financially advantageous to us in the short run, but creates ill will towards us over time.

So long as anyone wants to initiate force against another for any reason there will not be peace. This includes forcing someone to give up their hard earned money (taxes), forcing someone to not put certain things in their bodies (drug laws), forcing someone to live by the ways of your religion, etc.
