Besides the obvious answer that wars benefit businesses that supply arms, weapons, transportation, food supplies, etc. etc to the various nations/sides/factions fighting, many nations have experienced strong economic growth following wars- whether they have won the war or not; just look at how much more prosperous the USA, Japan, (West) Germany and some other nations became following the second world war; generally though, wars are fought between nations for wealth and resources and, as the phrase goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For, better or worse, all nations seem to see a dramatic rise in patriotism and national pride before and during times of war. Although most wars have been fought over political and/or religious supremacy or over control of world resources, I do believe that many wars have been necessary, just and fought for moral principles. Countless wars have been waged for independence of native peoples being subjected to control by foreign, alien powers; others have been fought to gain rights, freedoms, liberties, etc. for groups of peoples- often the majority of the people living in a nation- who previously had none under corrupt and powerful dictators and/or other types of government. All wars are hellish, some though are truly justified. What would the lifes of peoples of the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and various Asian nations be like if they had not fought wars of liberation against their European colonial oppressors? Would Europe, Asia and the world for that matter have been better off had the Nazis and Japanese been allowed to simply conquer the world? Some more interesting questions r/e more recent American wars include: are the lifes of all Kuwaitis and Iraqi Shi' ia, Kurds, and other groups (excluding the Sunni party who was a militarily powerful minority running the government) not already better off now that they have a voice in their own affairs. Another thing to look at is how much technology that has been designed for war has crossed over into mainstream society as well. I know that I sound like a war-monger, I'm just trying to say that despite the horrors of all wars, some wars have been necessary and wars have provided some benefits to societies too.

Population control can't be done via war. Population control needs to be controlled in a way that limits the population with a minimum of loss of production... genocide instead of war.

War is good for resolving problems that cannot be resolved in other ways or ignored. For example, Nazi Germany wasn't going to stop until all of the world was under their control, so people had to make war on them or be killed.
