In truth, the Declaration was first issued on July 4, 1776, but not all of the delegates signed it. I believe the last signatures came later in 1776, some time in August. If my memory serves me correctly (from my college American history courses), the last signature came a few years after '76.

There was also the war of 1812 which involved the british. By 1850, the USs sovereignty was only abused once during pearl harbour. Also the Americans follow and still follow the manifest destiny which claims that they were given the god given right and duty to spread democracy and christianity across the north american continent (now the world).
