He failed to pay taxes from the $1million that he won from the show 'Survivor'. I think a prison sentence is well deserved, but is over 4 years a fair punishment?

It's his own fault. He originally had a deal to plead guilty that wouldn't have resulted in any jail time and he decided to go to trial instead. He completely pissed off the judge by lying and contradicting his own testimony during the trial and got an appropriate sentence. I don't expect that he will be in prison for the entire 51 months. It seems like most people only seem to serve about 1/2 of their prison time unless they do something stupid in prison.

I don't think he deserves to be in jail for that length of time. Maybe 6 - 8 months or something. I guess the courts are just trying to prove a point about reality show stars and their winnings by using Richard Hatch as an example.

I think that 4 years is a bit harsh...my question is why didnt they take the taxes out before they paid him? i thought that was standard with all winnings or earnings for the payer to deduct taxes and send them in. Did he spend all the money and now cant pay? What a moran... well at anyrate, he won survivor im sure he will survive in prison living off our tax dollars.

It the most! That wealthy bastard's greed gained him the money and it also gained him reformatory time. Tax evasion is extreme, for that remember, something with regard to the federal authorities is extreme and they don't take it gently. If it purely offered a some weeks lockdown, a lot extra human beings must be doing it. definite, he merits it, and probably he ought to apply this as a time to mirror on his personality and integrity. He for sure has little or no. the genuine tale w/ actual courtroom information:

Richard Hatch not only failed to pay taxes, but he laughed in the face of the law...he thought he won immunity with the IRS, so he is finally seeing what the definition of "reality" really is...I mean, he won the money, made his hairy gross self a household name, finished his 15 minutes of fame, and couldn't pay his taxes? Welcome to the real world Richard, don't drop your toothbrush.....

I was just thinking the same thing. But, considering how belligerent he was on the show, I can imagine how he must have been during the court proceedings. He's quite the outspoken person. Who knows? Yes, I thought it was a bit stiff.

He should be doing three concurrent life sentences just for his behavior on the show.
And to momof3boyz...I'm sure Richard would be all over anything you think "a bit stiff".
