Based on the Joan Lindsay novel - not on a true story. Lindsay simply tried to create that impression and ever since people have tried to find an account in contemporeanous newspapers but did not succeed.

It was a very long time ago but I think that no one ever found the girls and what had happened to them. If I remember right, this was based on a true story.
