sounds like you need to clean your capstan and pinch roller. you can do this w/ some q-tips and rubbing alcohol. you can search for more info - "how to clean tape heads", etc. you could also buy a cleaning cassette, but i think the first suggestion does a better job (and is cheaper)

Clean the tape head with some iso propyl alcohol or acetone......
u can find these in Nail Paint remover or Paint thinner or Perfumes.
The best option is to use a spray called WD-40 ....its available in almost all hardware and electronics stores. use it to clean the tape head and other moving parts ......
If the problem persists ....get ur stereo serviced or better still buy a good CD player.

cleaning may help but.
1. the drive belt in your tape machine may be slipping.
2. your tapes may need to be unwound and rewound

if the problem is better on smaller time tapes then your drive belt is slipping and will need to be replaced
