This happened to me this morning and I was wondering why?

To be clearer. I took out a gal. milk cont. with apx. less than 1/2" of milk left in it, held cap in hand while I poured some milk in my cup for coffee cream, sat the cont. down then sat the cap back on, but did not push it down all the way. One side of the cap rose and then ploped back down as if it were attached by a hinge on one side. This happened over and over again for at least a full minute. I actually stopped it by shoving the cap on all the way as it started to freak me out. Keep in mind that if gas had built up in it wouldn't it have escaped while I had the cap off pouring a little milk in my coffee for cream? By the way just checked the exp. date on cont. , it is Aug. 4, 2006 so it was not expired milk either. Just wanted to be clear that it was not one big pop and milk not expired. Anyone able to answer this? Thanks.

Was the milk spoiled? As milk ferments, carbon dioxide gas is generated. That could cause the top to pop off.

umm if this happens the milk is way expired, unless you just dropped the cap or it's a fresh bottle. sometimes there is pressure behind the cap, but normally there's not.

as the frmentation of milk starts, it produces carbon dioxide gas and so the pressure inside also develops, so it can be the cause of cap pop up.

i think u holded the milk carton too tight that the air pushed the cap into the air and fell on the ground or table or something
