In nature trees heal if struck by lightening or animals scrape
them, so I doubt it will die. Usually they will recover alone.

I'd imagine it was accidental, and it may kill the tree. Put some cheesecloth over it until the bark grows back so animals can't scrape more bark off.

If you scraped it comepletely around the perimeter of the trunk, it can kill it. If not, do nothing, let nature heal itself. Good luck.
